KTM 390 Adventure X Endurance Ride: 1,044.3 km, 18 Hours and the 14L Full Tank Challenge.

One motorcycle. More than 1,000 kilometres. Almost 19 hours on the road.
The KTM 390 Adventure X was put through an extended real-world endurance run designed to explore not only its long-distance capability, but also its fuel range, highway performance and rider endurance.
The challenge began at 9:02 am with the motorcycle’s fuel tank filled to its recorded 14-litre capacity and the odometer reading 1,586 km.
What followed was a continuous journey covering 1,044.3 km, stretching from the start/finish point through Tanjung Malim, Simpang Pulai, Bukit Gantang, Butterworth, Alor Setar and back south through the North-South Expressway.
The ride finally concluded at 3:21 am, after 18 hours and 19 minutes.
But before the ride became an endurance test, there was another objective to complete first:
The Full Tank Challenge Begins
At 9:02 am, the KTM 390 Adventure X started its endurance run with:
- Odometer: 1,586 km
- Trip meter: 0.0 km
- Fuel: Full tank — 14L
- Location: Start / Finish Point
The first objective was straightforward: determine how far the KTM 390 Adventure X could travel on the initial full tank under real-world riding conditions.
The first stop came at Tanjung Malim Layby on the North-South Expressway (NSE) at 10:40 am.
By then, the motorcycle had covered: 129.4 km
The ride continued north towards Simpang Pulai.
238.1 km — Fuel Warning Enters the Equation
At 11:44 am, the KTM reached Simpang Pulai Layby, with the trip meter showing 238.1 km.
This was where the Full Tank Challenge became more interesting.
The recorded fuel status indicated: LOW FUEL
Rather than simply looking at the tank capacity, the challenge was now about observing how far the motorcycle could continue before the initial fuel load was effectively exhausted.
The KTM 390 Adventure X pressed on towards Bukit Gantang.
At 12:50 pm, the motorcycle arrived at Bukit Gantang Layby, with:
Trip distance: 304.7 km
- Elapsed time: 3 hours 48 minutes
The fuel status was again recorded as: LOW FUEL
The finish line for the Full Tank Challenge was now only a short distance away.
331.3 km on the Initial Fuel Load
At 1:09 pm, the KTM 390 Adventure X reached Gunung Semanggol on the NSE.
The trip meter read:
331.3 km
This marked the end of the Full Tank Challenge.
The recorded fuel status at this point was: 14L empty + 1.5L added (Back up fuel)
Based on the recorded 14-litre fuel load, the calculated distance achieved was approximately: 23.66 km/L
This figure is calculated from the recorded 331.3 km travelled against the stated 14L initial fuel load.
It is important to note that this is a real-world ride figure from this specific endurance run, rather than a laboratory fuel-consumption figure. Riding conditions, traffic, speed, wind, load, riding style and road elevation can all influence actual consumption.
Nevertheless, covering more than 330 km on the initial fuel load became one of the defining moments of the endurance test.
Refuelling and the Second Phase
With the Full Tank Challenge completed, the ride changed from a fuel-range exercise into a full-scale endurance run.
At 1:09 pm, the first refuelling took place at Gunung Semanggol.
The recorded fuel tally became: 14L + 1.5L
Shortly afterwards, at 1:42 pm, another stop at Gunung Semanggol RSA added a further 10 litres.
The accumulated recorded fuel became: 14L + 1.5L + 10L
By this point, the KTM 390 Adventure X had already covered 336.2 km.
The next objective was to maintain the pace and continue north.
Across Butterworth and Into Kedah
At 2:44 pm, the KTM 390 Adventure X reached Bagan Ajam, Butterworth as the 1st Check Point of the day.
The trip meter had reached: 406.5 km
The motorcycle continued towards Permatang Sintok, Kepala Batas, where another fuel stop was recorded at 3:03 pm.
A further 7.2 litres was added.
The cumulative recorded fuel tally was now: 14L + 1.5L + 10L + 7.2L
The ride continued north.
At 4:36 pm, the KTM 390 Adventure X arrived in Alor Setar, Kedah, with the trip meter showing:
532.4 km at the 2nd Check Point.
More than halfway through the eventual 1,000-kilometre ride, the KTM 390 Adventure X was still on the road.
628 km and Beyond
By 6:30 pm, the motorcycle had reached another checkpoint in Kepala Batas, Penang, with:
628.2 km recorded.
The endurance ride was now entering its evening phase.
At 9:25 pm, the KTM reached Sungai Dua, Penang, where another 9.9 litres was recorded as added.
The cumulative fuel tally became: 14L + 1.5L + 10L + 7.2L + 9.9L
The trip meter had reached: 648.5 km
The journey then turned south once again.
The Long Night Ride
From Penang, the KTM 390 Adventure X retraced its route along the North-South Expressway.
At 10:12 pm, the motorcycle stopped at Gunung Semanggol RSA, with the trip meter at:
713.3 km
Forty-six minutes later, another stop was made at Sungai Perak RSA.
The trip meter had now reached: 769.7 km
The endurance ride had entered its final third.
At 12:14 am, the KTM 390 Adventure X arrived at Tapah RSA.
The trip meter showed: 854.3 km
A further 5 litres was recorded as added.
The accumulated recorded fuel tally was now: 14L + 1.5L + 10L + 7.2L + 9.9L + 5L
Crossing the 900 km Mark
The KTM 390 Adventure X remained on the road.
At 1:06 am, another stop at Tapah RSA brought the trip meter to: 906.9 km
The next stop was Rawang Layby, reached at 2:26 am.
The motorcycle had now covered: 962.7 km
Only 81.6 km remained before the completion of the 1,000-kilometre objective.
After more than 17 hours on the road, the KTM 390 Adventure X was entering the final stretch of the endurance ride.
1,044.3 km — Ride Completed
At 3:21 am, the KTM 390 Adventure X finally returned to the Start / Finish Point.
The final readings were:
- Total trip distance: 1,044.3 km
- Final odometer: 2,630 km
- Total elapsed time: 18 hours 19 minutes
- Recorded fuel additions: 1.5L + 10L + 7.2L + 9.9L + 5L, in addition to the initial 14L
- Total recorded fuel v volume: 47.6L, including the initial 14L
The calculated average moving/elapsed-trip speed based simply on the trip distance and total recorded duration was approximately: 57.0 km/h
This is a mathematical average over the full recorded duration and should not be interpreted as the motorcycle’s cruising speed.

More Than Just a Mileage Test
The KTM 390 Adventure X Endurance Ride was ultimately about more than simply putting kilometres onto the odometer.
The first 331.3 km focused on the motorcycle’s fuel range under actual road conditions.
Once the Full Tank Challenge was completed, the objective shifted towards endurance — maintaining the journey through changing traffic conditions, multiple stops, daylight, evening traffic and finally a long night ride.
From the start at 9:02 am to the finish at 3:21 am, the KTM remained part of an almost continuous 18-hour-19-minute journey.
The final figure tells the story:
1,044.3 KM
That is the distance recorded by the trip meter over the course of the endurance ride.
And at the heart of the test was the figure that started everything:
331.3 KM ON THE FULL TANK CHALLENGE
For the KTM 390 Adventure X, this endurance run provided a real-world look at its long-distance capability — from fuel range to highway travel and ultimately rider-and-machine endurance.
The numbers are now recorded.
The road did the rest.
